Nineteen years ago today, shortly before midnight, I was settling down for my first night ever in Guatemala. It was way before the days of easy $10 airport shuttles and traveling between Guatemala City and Antigua, and travel to my hotel would have either involved a series of city buses (far too daunting for a novice) or a taxi ride with a driver who may or may not have been someone you could trust.
